CORE Lab Specialist - External Service
2. Job Purpose
The Core Laboratory Specialist for Wind Tunnel Aerodynamics is tasked with delivering high-quality
technical support to users of the Research Laboratories Core Wind Tunnel Facility. This role
encompasses a wide range of responsibilities related to the daily operations, including managing
equipment, training users, and ensuring compliance with Khalifa University’s (KU’s) Environmental,
Health, and Safety (EHS) regulations for the proper and safe use of equipment and materials.
Additionally, the Aerodynamics Specialist will foster a culture of continuous improvement to maintain
excellent research user services within the Research Core Laboratories.

Laboratory Safety
• Drive practices and metrics, which ensure that the Core Wind Tuunel Facility operates in
compliance with all aspects of Khalifa University Environmental EHS policies.
Laboratory Operations
• Responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and user training for all equipment operated in
the Core Wind Tunnel Facility. This role includes working closely with faculty, staff, students, and
researchers to provide technical support in wind tunnel experiments including test model
preparation, data collection and analysis.
• Equipment operations include the state-of-the-art closed circuit dual test section (2.5 m x 2.1 m x
4.0 m; 1.2 m x 1.0 m x 6.0 m) low speed wind tunnel.
• The successful candidate will contribute to the research and educational mission of the university
by enabling high-quality data generation and analysis associated with wind tunnel testing.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide a safe environment for all equipment operated in the Core Wind Tunnel Facility.
• Oversee the planning for the use of the closed circuit wind tunnel test schedule including the
processing of end user requests.
• Maintain detailed records of all wind tunnel activities and operational use, including experiments,
instrument logs, and maintenance activities.

• Design, construct and instrument wind tunnel test models and when applicable manage the
outsourcing for the manufacture of advanced test models.
• Specify and procure equipment needed to support aerodynamic testing including consumables.
• Oversee the storage of instrumentation hardware and materials.
• Setup, calibrate and maintain a suite of flow characterization instruments, including:
o Hot-wire and hot-film anemometers
o Pressure scanners, Pitot tubes and multi-hole probes
o Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) systems
o Laser-Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) systems
o Force balances
o Data acquisition systems (DAQ), cameras and optical components
o Traverse systems
o Flow seeding and visualization equipment
• Develop/maintain computer graphical programming environments (such as NI LabView) for the
control and monitoring of wind tunnel systems including the fan, traversing, cooling, turntables
and data acquisition systems.
• Develop/maintain computer programs (such as LabView and Matlab) for supporting various
measurement techniques including data acquisition.
• Review wind tunnel test data for accuracy and completeness, including troubleshooting and
isolating problems associated with aerodynamic test performance or data quality.
• Plan and perform periodic maintenance of the wind tunnel and the facility instrumentation. This
includes the general maintenance and upkeep of Wind Tunnel Facility ensuring that its systems
and instrumentations are functioning properly and managing data storage on local computers and
remote server for archive purposes.
• Write certification and design assurance test plans, test procedures and formal test reports.
• Develop standard operational procedures (SOPs), including safety, for equipment and
instruments based on manufacturer operational manuals.
Resource Management
• Assist in the determination of fiscal requirements and in the preparation of budgetary
recommendations, including recommending capital equipment expenditures, ensure appropriate
resource levels, and comply with organizational expenditure requirements.
• Supervise the inventory of commonly used lab supplies, maintenance parts and any other items
related to research lab operations.
• Evaluates technical requirements based on bids received from potential vendors for purchase of
lab equipment.
• Ensure information on lab website is kept up to date including all training schedules, equipment
schedules and equipment descriptions.
• Guide the faculty and researchers on the purchase of consumables and accessories for equipment
usage.
• Recommend appropriate training courses as per the user research interests.

• Maintain liaison with investigators, research personnel and staff to solve specific operating
problems and improve technical activities

• Coordinate with other departments to facilitate the accomplishment of tasks and responsibilities
related to the operations of the Research Laboratories Department.
