Job Introduction

BBC Arabic provides news, current affairs and programmes on Radio, TV and Online to Arabic speaking audiences in the Middle East and across the world, 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The output is modern in style and outlook and adheres to BBC values of accuracy and impartiality. It has broad appeal, free from commercial, political and religious affiliations or pressures. BBC Arabic reaches a weekly audience of approximately 44 million across platforms and provides one quarter of output across the entire World Service.

We are recruiting a Senior Journalist who will be responsible for content, including editorial control, reporting, selection and compilation of material, production, leading teams and implementing effective use of resources.

Job Responsibilities

• Responsible for originating and producing stories which may include scripting, editing, outputting, filming and presenting content across a range of BBC output.
• Commission and select relevant materials ensuring they meet expectations of our audiences and adhere to the BBC’s editorial.
• May be required to undertake on-air reporting, may be required to film and edit material for broadcast where appropriate.
• May include the production and presentation of programmes. This might be live or recorded.
• May be required to present the content on radio, TV or online. This might be live or recorded.
• As required, to allocate work to a team and check progress; ensure the professional contribution of staff and the quality of output.
• Responsible for staff rota frames and cares to the utmost for timesheet and time management.
• To initiate creative coverage plans for news events and liaises with other Cairo and London teams over in-depth journalism.
• Seek ways to increase diversity in our workforce and to ensure that our output reflects the audiences we serve.
• Deliver journalism of the highest standard and within the required timeframe using available resources.
• To act as a facilitator of change, clearly communicating and sharing best practices are shared between teams.
• Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.

Are you the Right Candidate?

• A high standard of editorial judgment and writing ability based on substantial journalism experience and knowledge of news and current affairs.
• Substantial and proven experience in video and digital journalism.
• Strong social media skills.
• An excellent understanding of BBC Arabic output and audiences.
• Good communication skills, ability to lead editorial meetings and strong sense of initiative
• To have full command and up-to-date knowledge of spoken and written modern standard Arabic, as first or equivalent language for the ability to correct scripts and minimize grammar and language mistakes.
• Good knowledge of written and spoken English to communicate effectively with various departments and help produce packages and digital content in English.
• To be ready to and prepared to be deployed on occasions to hostile environments.
• To research and plan deployments including preparing risk assessments, sharing editorial guidance, fixing logistics and overall budgeting.
• Ability to work unsupervised.
• To give regular feedback to team members and cares for their training needs in liaison with the editors.
• To liaise closely with various teams and with contributors, shoot edits and stringers and when commissioning material from external sources.
• To be able to work effectively and calmly in an environment where news is constantly changing and being updated and have the temperament to enjoy the process.
