Description

The purpose of this classification is to perform manual work functions associated with construction, repair, maintenance, landscaping, and groundskeeping of city parks and recreation facilities.

Field Maintenance Worker I maintains public recreational parks and fields, such as softball fields, soccer fields, and football fields. They perform manual tasks associated with landscaping, grounds keeping, and maintenance of city parks/recreation facilities. Work and assist sports tournaments.

Schedule: Monday - Thursday 6:00 am - 3:30 pm, Fridays 6:00 am - 10:00 am ; Overtime opportunities working weekend tournaments!

Essential Functions

  • Maintains public recreational parks and fields, such as softball fields, soccer fields, and football fields.
  • Performs manual tasks associated with landscaping, groundskeeping, irrigation and maintenance of city parks/recreation facilities.
  • Assists with set up and maintenance during special events/activities/tournaments. Set up tents, pick up trash, empty trash, and clean and stock bathrooms.
  • Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in department projects and activities, which may include a dump truck, front end loader, backhoe, tractor, tiller, bush hog, mower, weed eater, edger, blower, jack hammer, chain saw, saw, axe, shovel, rake, spraying equipment, and mechanic tools
  • Drag, chalk and paint lines to prep fields for athletic events
  • Transports, loads and unloads various materials and equipment used in projects.
  • Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition.
  • Responds to emergency calls during hurricanes, inclement weather, or other emergency situations.
  • Utilizes precautionary safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, time cards, maintenance reports, spray records, and other documents.
  • Receives various forms, reports, maintenance reports, work orders, diagrams, maps, manuals, chemical data sheets, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations.
  • Skill in operating, maneuvering and/or controlling the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data according to a prescribed schema or plan.
  • Ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well-established policies, procedures and standards.
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.
  • Ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by one (1) years previous experience and/or training in the area of assignment, such as, landscaping/grounds keeping, athletic field maintenance or other related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Licenses or Certifications: Valid State of Alabama driver’s license.

Additional Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is moderate work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force. Work requires regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in an outdoor environment. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
