A Kitchen Steward is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and order of the kitchen, supporting the kitchen staff by ensuring that all utensils, dishes, and cooking equipment are cleaned, sanitized, and stored properly. They also assist with other tasks to keep the kitchen running smoothly, such as restocking supplies, managing waste disposal, and occasionally helping with food preparation tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cleaning and Sanitation:
    • Wash and sanitize all kitchen equipment, dishes, utensils, and other tools used in food preparation and service.
    • Maintain the cleanliness of kitchen areas, including floors, walls, and countertops.
    • Ensure that all cleaning is done in compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Equipment Handling:
    • Properly store clean dishes, utensils, and equipment in designated areas.
    • Handle kitchen equipment safely, ensuring it is properly cleaned and stored after use.
  • Waste Management:
    • Collect and dispose of kitchen waste, including food scraps and trash, following proper recycling and waste disposal procedures.
    • Ensure that garbage bins are emptied regularly and cleaned.
  • Inventory and Restocking:
    • Monitor inventory levels of cleaning supplies and notify the kitchen supervisor when restocking is needed.
    • Assist in receiving and storing deliveries of kitchen supplies and food items.
  • Support to Kitchen Staff:
    • Assist chefs and other kitchen staff as needed, including tasks like peeling vegetables, preparing ingredients, and assembling dishes.
    • Help in setting up the kitchen for meal service and cleaning up afterward.
Skills and Qualifications:

  • Attention to Detail: Ability to maintain high cleanliness standards and follow sanitation procedures.
  • Physical Stamina: Capable of standing for long periods and performing physically demanding tasks, such as lifting heavy pots and pans.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a kitchen team, supporting colleagues as needed.
  • Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Communication: Basic communication skills to follow instructions and communicate with team members.

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous experience in a kitchen or food service environment is a plus but not always required.
  • Familiarity with kitchen equipment and basic food preparation techniques.
