The position
BACKGROUND
The Om Habibeh Foundation (OHF) is an Egyptian non-profit organization established in 1991 under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Solidarity. Founded by Om Habibeh Sultan Mohamed Shah Aga Khan, OHF is the implementation agency of the Aga Khan Foundation to support local communities in the governorate of Aswan in areas including health care, education, and provide income for deprived communities. OHF works in Continuing Education, Civil Society, Agriculture and Food Security, Economic Inclusion, Women Empowerment, and Early Childhood Development.
In 2024, the Spanish Cooperation in Egypt approved the funding of "Tamkeen" Seeds of the Future Project to be managed and implemented by Om Habibeh Foundation in Aswan. The project will be implemented in Karkar, Kom Ombo, and Nasr El Nuba, aiming to accelerate progress on gender equality in Egypt through strengthening the economic resilience of women in rural areas in the Governorate of Aswan by fostering climate-smart agriculture solutions.
Additionally, OHF is driving climate action in Aswan by convening a formal coalition that includes government agencies, private sector entities, and civil society organisations, to increase awareness about the impacts of climate change and enhance climate resilience.
Position Objectives
The agronomist will undertake the implementation of all technical activities in the targeted villages as set out in the activities plan in cooperation with the project team. He/she will also test the fertility of the soil and how well the crops can grow in different environments and places. He/she will ensure good technical communication in interacting with different people in the communities. The agronomist will work closely with the Project Officer to ensure solid implementation and results for the project.
Moreover, the agronomist will work on raising awareness of different communities in Aswan regarding the impacts of climate change and enhancing climate resilience.
Core Responsibilities
General Tasks:
- Orient women and facilitators about the programme.
- Supervise the work of the kitchen and rooftop gardens’ facilitators and assess their performance.
- Ensure women’ groups formation and the seasonal agric. plans are in place and with high quality.
- Coordinate the work of the agric. consultants with women and facilitators.
- Conduct village agriculture baseline and endline (farmers, crops, land … etc.).
- Performing any other duties assigned by the management team.
Technical And Specific Tasks
Encourage women household initiatives, facilitators and agric. committee.
- Conduct field visits, demonstrations and cross visits for women and facilitators to support compost home making and other agriculture initiatives.
- Disseminate the information on the fertilizers and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) requirements of each vegetable.
- Support the formation and meetings of the CSOs women agricultural committee.
Promote the cultivation of the kitchen and rooftop gardens’ vegetables.
- Select, train, and assess the performance of KGs facilitators.
- Link women to outlets and marketing places.
- Disseminate information about vegetables among facilitators and women households.
- Raise awareness on the best use of modern irrigation to save water.
- Coordinate the work with the marketing officer and female facilitators to market the production in and outside the village.
Climate Resilience Tasks:
- Assess the impact of climate change on agricultural production.
- Implement climate-resilient agricultural strategies.
- Execute sustainable agricultural projects and improve water resource management.
- Train farmers on techniques for adapting to climate change.
- Monitor climate conditions and provide regular reports.
- Raise community awareness about climate change and adaptation.
- Coordinate with relevant entities to implement joint programs and projects.
The requirements
Qualification & Experience
- A bachelor’s degree in agriculture.
- At least 4 years of working experience in the agriculture field, plant protection, and Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
- Ability to build trust, motivate and work with women.
- Strong sense of responsibility, professionalism, and thoroughness.
- Ability to work within tight deadlines.
- Very good organizational, interpersonal, communication, training, and facilitation skills.
- Strong IT skills.
- Good reporting skills.
