The Lab Assistant Will Support Faculty Members In Preparing, Conducting, And Maintaining Laboratory Sessions And Research Activities Across The Following Specializations
- Anatomy
- Biology

Qualifications & Education
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree (M.Sc.) in Anatomy, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physiology, or a related medical science discipline; OR Applicants who have passed USMLE Part 1 and 2, or the Canadian Medical Licensing Exam, will be preferred.
Experience
- Prior experience in a laboratory setting, either through academic study, research projects, or previous employment, is preferred but not mandatory.
- Experience in assisting with practical demonstrations, equipment handling, and lab organization is considered valuable.
Skills / Training / Knowledge
- Strong foundational knowledge in the relevant medical science specialization.
- Excellent organizational, time-management, and communication skills.
- Ability to ensure lab procedures are followed and that students understand complex scientific methods.
- Proficiency in handling laboratory equipment and materials, including laboratory software and safety protocols.
- Commitment to maintaining academic integrity, lab safety, and student success.
Job Description
- Collaborate with faculty to prepare and organize laboratory experiments, ensuring all necessary materials, reagents, and equipment are available before each lab session.
- Maintain laboratory facilities, including cleaning, organizing, and storing equipment and specimens after each use.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols, proper handling of hazardous materials, and adherence to health and safety standards in the lab.
- Assist faculty during practical laboratory sessions by demonstrating techniques, guiding students through experimental procedures, and addressing student queries.
- Ensure that students properly use lab equipment such as microscopes, anatomical models, diagnostic tools, and chemical instruments.
- Monitor lab activities to ensure students follow protocols, procedures, and safety guidelines, especially in clinical and anatomical labs.
- Offer academic support by explaining laboratory concepts and procedures, clarifying complex techniques, and assisting students in understanding practical applications of their coursework.
- Hold office hours to assist students with lab-related questions and review materials, ensuring they are well-prepared for lab assessments.
- Provide guidance on how to document lab findings accurately and compile lab reports.
- Assist faculty in grading lab reports, quizzes, and assignments, ensuring consistency in assessments and providing constructive feedback to help students improve their understanding of lab work.
- Collaborate with faculty to align grading standards with course learning outcomes and objectives.
- Assist faculty with research projects by helping with data collection, managing lab results, and performing routine lab experiments.
- Conduct literature reviews and assist in the preparation of research proposals, manuscripts, or presentations for academic conferences and seminars.
- Ensure proper documentation and data handling during research activities, maintaining high standards of academic integrity.
- Participate in faculty meetings and discussions related to laboratory management, curriculum planning, and student progress in lab-based courses.
- Help organize departmental events such as laboratory workshops, medical demonstrations, and guest lectures.
- Assist with maintaining records of student performance in labs, managing lab schedules, and preparing lab manuals or instructional materials.
- Serve as a liaison between students and faculty regarding lab-related announcements, deadlines, and other important academic information.
- Encourage active participation from students during lab sessions and practical demonstrations.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative lab environment where students feel confident in asking for help and working together.
- Promote peer learning by organizing group study sessions or lab review activities outside of regular class hours.
- Ensure strict adherence to all safety guidelines, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe disposal of biological or chemical waste.
- Monitor lab conditions and address any potential safety hazards or equipment malfunctions immediately.
- Provide safety orientations and training to students at the beginning of each lab session to reinforce the importance of lab safety.
