Job Description

The Electrical and Automation Engineer will conduct engineering design reviews and analysis assignments. Projects, by nature of their complexity and difficulty, that incumbent would undertake will require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in Electrical engineering and automation field. Project works and assignments may be broad in nature, requiring ingenuity and cross-functional coordination.

What You Will Do:

  • Perform detailed engineering review of plans independently as assigned by the engineering manager, for compliance with applicable Rules, Regulations, and contract commitments.
  • Perform work that involves conventional engineering practices but may include moderately complex problems such as resolving conflicting design requirements, material standards, or coordinating activities among other disciplines.
  • Apply intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of technical responsibility.
  • Draft technically accurate and timely reports and responses to client letters and other forms of communication for review by an experienced engineer or engineering manager.
  • Prepare accurate and timely weekly reports and billing on all work performed.
  • Communicate the status of the current workload to all appropriate team members to ensure the client's needs will be met.
  • Propose technical advice to field operations and other technical offices.
  • Propose new approaches to problems encountered and recommend changes in methods, procedures, or designs.
  • May work directly with clients to identify and resolve problems in technical expertise.
  • Work as a team member within the group and autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Implement and maintain ABS Quality System requirements relative to responsibilities after undergoing ABS Quality System training.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

  • B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering or Marine Systems Engineering with specialization in electrical systems.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience working in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Should have advanced practical industry-related experience.
  • Knowledge of related technical disciplines, and be familiar with Marine Electrical and automation system design and verification.
  • Knowledge of Design and installation of LV and HV systems (e.g., Generators, Switchboards, electric motors, frequency drives, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Installation of electrical equipment in hazardous areas.
  • Knowledge of Propulsion control, automation principles
  • Knowledge of applicable Rules and Regulations and the impact of Rule applications and interpretations.
  • Knowledge of SOLAS and MARPOL is desired.
  • Knowledge of company business policies and procedures.
  • The human relations skills necessary to maintain positive client contacts and provide leadership and motivation to subordinate staff and peers.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and solve complex or unique engineering problems.
  • Ability to undertake short- and long-term planning to provide for efficient and effective scheduling of work assignments.
  • A working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management Systems (internal candidates only).

It Would Be Nice If You Had

  • Professional or chartered engineer license
  • Master’s Degree

Reporting Relationships:

The incumbent will report to an Engineering Manager. This position has no direct reports.

Working Conditions and Schedule:

Work is primarily sedentary. Occasionally exerting up to 10 pounds of force and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
