Job Description

2.1 Anesthesia specialist is a qualified doctor who provide anesthetics (drugs which cause loss of sensation) to

patients before, during and after surgery. This is to make sure that they don't feel pain.

2.2 As an anesthetist he will monitor patients closely after surgery to make sure that they recover comfortably.

Responsibilities

3.1 To provide and monitor 24 hours emergency anesthesia.

3.2 To help provide support for 24 hours epidural services.

3.3 Provide anesthetics to patients for surgery and intensive care.

3.4 The main responsibility would be to care for patients before, during and after surgery, making sure that they

are safe and comfortable.

3.5 Anesthetists form the largest single hospital medical specialty and their skills are used in all aspects of patient

care.

3.6 The perioperative anesthetic care of the surgical patient is the core of specialty work (and this includes all types

of surgery from simple body surface surgery in adults to the most complex surgery in patients of all ages,

including the premature newborn.

3.7 The preoperative preparation of surgical patients.

3.8 prepare patients for surgery by explaining any risks or side effects

3.9 Observe and monitor patients during surgery, responding quickly to any changes.

3.10 To work with the consultant staff to provide a comprehensive anesthesia services across NMCRH-KC.

3.11 Expected to participate in overall provision of anesthetic services within the department, to deputies for absent

colleagues, to work flexibly, to ensure services and patient care.

3.12 To aid in the work of chronic pain services.

3.13 Help psychiatric patients receiving electric shock therapy.

3.14 The resuscitation and stabilization of patients in the Emergency Department.

3.15 Pain relief in labor and obstetric anesthesia.

3.16 Intensive care medicine.

3.17 Transport of acutely ill and injured patients.

3.18 Pre-hospital emergency care.

3.19 Pain medicine including:

  • The relief of post-operative pain, acute pain medicine and the management of acute teams, Chronic and cancer pain management. 3.20 The provision of sedation and anesthesia for patients undergoing various procedures outside the operating theatre. Examples of this include different endoscopic procedures, interventional radiology and dental surgery (this list is not exclusive). 3.21 Administer anesthetics to patients having operations outside the operating theatre such as radiology and radiotherapy, and dental surgery. 3.22 Use different types of anesthetics such as: local anesthetic - for a minor operation on a small area of the body such as the mouth, regional anesthetic – such as an epidural to numb a larger area of the body like the lower back in childbirth, general anesthetic – for more serious operations, to make the patient totally unconscious. 3.23 Work closely with other healthcare professionals to provide the most appropriate and complete treatment plan for your patients. 3.24 Spend time in a variety of settings such as consulting rooms, wards, operating theatres and special units like accident and emergency. 3.25 Deal with emergency situations, so you'll need to be able to work under pressure and make quick decisions.

3.26 To achieve value of money through making the most effective use of the available resources.

3.27 To understand professional development activities, audit, and engage in appraisal.

3.28 Comply with all OSH and infection control policies, standards and procedures and cooperate with hospital

management to comply those requirements

3.29 Work accordance with the documented OSH procedures and instructions, specific responsibilities

3.30 Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures

3.31 Notifying OSH Hazards, incidents, Near misses and issues and assistance with the preparation of risk

assessments, incident reports

3.32 Comply with Waste management procedures and policies

3.33 Attend applicable OSH/Infection control training programs, mock drills and awareness programs

3.34 Use of appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems

  • SUPERVISION ARRANGEMENT:

4.1 Anesthesia specialist expected to have the skills and experiences to allow him to safely anesthetize patients who

are straightforward or those who present moderate difficulty without immediate supervision.

4.2 Anesthesia specialist will be expected to stand in for absent consultant staff in certain lists.

4.3 The supervising consultant and the anesthesia specialist will agree which lists are appropriate.

4.4 During normal working hours the consultant supervision will be provided by the consultant assigned to the

theater list.

4.5 Out of hours the consultant on-call provide cover.

  • TRAINING COURSES REQUIRED:

5.1 Basic cardiac life support.

5.2 Advanced cardiac live support.

5.3 Pediatric advanced cardiac life support.

5.4 Trauma advanced life support.

  • WORKING HOURS:

6.1 Long hours including nights and weekends, and will be part of an out-of-hours Rota system.

6.2 HAAD legislation has established the number of hours 48 a week.

  • SKILLS, INTERESTS AND QUALITIES:

7.1 A commitment to caring for others.

7.2 An interest and ability in science, medicine, anatomy and physiology.

7.3 The ability to work under pressure and make quick, accurate decisions.

7.4 Practical skills for examining patients and performing clinical procedures

7.5 Good communication skills and the ability to explain choices to patients.

7.6 The ability to work independently and also with other members of the theatre team.

7.7 Leadership and management skills

7.8 The ability to always work to high professional standards.

7.9 Keen interest in your specialist field and a willingness to keep your skills up to date.

Qualifications

  • QUALIFICATION, LICENSURE, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE:

8.1 Anesthesia consultant must complete a recognized 5-7 year degree in medicine.

8.2 He/ She will also have to do further training which will last between 5 to 8 years.

8.3 Current license in country of origin with Specialist Anesthesiologist HAAD license to practice in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E.
